So Thursday, at our 2nd to last day at Raila, we taught the kids about Jesus as the Light of the World. And we did a little tissue paper craft where they glue tissue paper on a candle. These kids had never done this before. It was so fun to teach them and watch them discover their own way to do it, and how to design using different colors. I love the craft segment each day. It's a time to sit and talk with the kids. And let's be honest, I probably haven't sat down and had a conversation with a 7th grade boy since I was in the 7th grade. It's a very intimidating age group to me.

But these boys are actually very sweet- well, I'm not sure what they're saying half the time, but they seem sweet. And they're trying so hard with the crafts. They asked me the other day what the "staple" food in the US was? Here it is Ugali. I wasn't sure how to answer, what would you say? I said pizza! But the boys asked me today how much my tennis shoes cost? I said $50. That is an outrageous amount to them. $4,150 shillings.
Meg just told me that Lucy, one of the interns at the school, told her today that her brother's house burnt down yesterday in Kibera.
There's no insurance in Kibera. So they moved in with Lucy. Meg asked her how much it would cost to rebuild his house and she said he was trying to start collecting it- 10,000 shillings. Which would be about $120. Meg says her Teva sandals cost about that. So a pair of sandals in the US, is worth a house in Kibera slum.
Meg and I got to teach 40 four year olds today. We just did a brief bible lesson and sang Jesus Loves Me and Jesus Loves the Little Children and gave the kids coloring sheets and stickers. It was such a treat for them, and for us.

Did I tell you yet that the older girls go to school for something like 12 hours a day? They leave before 6:30 a.m. and come back after 6:30 p.m. Even the primary students are there for a really long time like 10 hours.
And there's another cute shot of Felista! Just in case you want to sponsor her.

So on Friday the Gospel was presented to the kids. They did a skit on Lazurus rising from the dead and talked about Jesus as the resurrection and the life.
I took all of their photos on Tuesday so we got those printed and they made little frames for them. They had to cut out some stuff and one of the 6th or 7th grade boys asked me to come over and show him how to cut. He hadn't used scissors before!
The kids on the playground love to play ring around the rosie and hokey pokey and London Bridges.
Check out these awesome cooks, cooking for 1,000 kids!
